Bleaching unwanted hair
You may prefer to bleach unwanted hair, rather than remove it. Bleaching lightens the colour of the hairs so that they blend in with the skin and are less conspicuous. Repeated bleaching will also eventually weaken the hair and slow down its rate of growth. It may also cause some hair to break off.
Facial hair, or hair on the arms or legs can be successfully camouflaged by bleaching. It is also a method used by some women to disguise growing hair - perhaps on the legs -which, when long enough, they will then remove by waxing.
It is very important to follow the packet instructions carefully when using a bleach. The active ingredients in the pack require mixing just before use, and must then be applied within a short time - usually 30 minutes at most. Unused bleach cannot be kept for later use. If you have not used a bleach before or if you change brands, it's a good idea to find out whether your skin will be sensitive to the product by doing a patch test on a small area of skin first. The directions will tell you how to reduce the strength of the bleach if it does cause irritation. You can also lessen any such reaction by reducing the length of time that you leave the bleach on your skin. Begin by mixing just enough bleach for a patch test. Once this has shown both the strength of the bleach needed and the length of time you should leave it on, mix a quantity large enough for the whole of the area you wish to bleach.
Best results are obtained by bleaching hair every other day (or as directed) until it reaches the tone you want. You can then repeat the process as and when necessary to maintain this effect. If you attempt to lighten very dark hair in one long and strong session you may well end up with almost white hair, which would be as obvious as the original dark hair you are trying to disguise!
